Iris

blooming iris
YAY! I bought this pot of iris last year at the farmer's market. I don't think I was able to give it enough light, or maybe it was simply too young of a plant - it didn't flower last year. It did very little, even the foliage didn't grow much.

I neglected it over the winter and completely forgot about them until this spring while I was moving apartments. The grassy leaves were shooting up and looking pretty good, so even though I couldn't remember what the hell it was, I dragged it with me to my new place.

Eventually I remembered what I had purchased last year, and put it in a super sunny spot. I wasn't truly expecting much, so these 2 blossoms are a wonderful surprise. I didn't even notice the buds prior to the bloom!

I'm not sure what type of iris this is exactly. Possibly versicolor, possibly blue flag? I think this may be the flower that the "fleur de lis" of Montreal represents, even though that translated actually means lilyflower.

I love the markings on the tips of the petals.

Either way, that's a very beautiful iris, and the markings are really fine and intricate. Beautiful colours, who needs a blue rose when you've got a blue iris? Good to know that it's quite a tough plant.
